As a social design lab, Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team connect people and technology in installations that enhance daily life in urban environments and spark the imagination. Clean air, clean water, clean energy, and clean space are their new values, and light is their language.
Internationally acclaimed works include WATERLICHT (a virtual flood showing the power of water), SMOG FREE PROJECT (the world's first outdoor air purifier that turns smog into jewelry), SMART HIGHWAY (roads that charge during the day and glow at night), SPACE WASTE LAB (visualizing and upcycling space waste), the world’s first URBAN SUN (cleans public spaces of the coronavirus), SEEING STARS (switching off all city lights to bring back the stars), the new organic fireworks SPARK, and the world's largest FIREFLY GARDEN in Bali.
Roosegaarde’s mantra, 'Schoonheid,’ is a Dutch word with two meanings: ‘beauty,’ as in creativity, and ‘clean,’ as in clean air and clean energy. For Roosegaarde, these should be fundamental to daily life.
In his Phaidon monograph, he states: "We first have to imagine a better future, and only then can we create it. People won't change because of numbers. But if we can trigger curiosity for a better world, that’s how to activate people. I don't believe in utopia, but in protopia—improving the world around us step by step."
Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde (1979) is a creative thinker and designer known for social projects that explore the connection between people, technology, and nature. From an early age, Roosegaarde was inspired by nature’s wonders, like glowing fireflies and jellyfish. His fascination with both nature and technology is reflected in iconic works such as the SMOG FREE PROJECT (the world’s largest outdoor air purifier that transforms smog into jewelry), the VAN GOGH PATH (a glowing bicycle path), and URBAN SUN, which purifies public spaces from coronavirus.
Daan Roosegaarde studied Fine Arts and earned a Master’s in architecture from The Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. In 2007, he founded Studio Roosegaarde, collaborating with his team to create future landscapes.
He has received prestigious awards, including the London Design Innovation Medal, INDEX Design Award, and two Dutch Design Awards, and has exhibited at the Design Museum London, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and Tate Modern.
Roosegaarde is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum, a professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, and a member of NASA’s Innovation team. Recognized by Forbes and WIRED as a creative changemaker, he lectures globally, including at TED. Phaidon has published a monograph on his work.
Daan Roosegaarde frequently lectures worldwide, including at TED and NASA, where he shares his visionary ideas and projects. In these talks, he presents his latest innovations—from bicycle paths in the Netherlands, where he reinterpreted The Starry Night to inspire thoughts on green energy, to Beijing, where he developed a smog vacuum cleaner to purify the air in local parks, to a dance floor that generates electricity to power a DJ booth. Experience Roosegaarde’s vision for a future where creativity is our true capital.
