22 BEDS
Landscape of dreaming and making love.
22 BEDS originated from sketches by Daan Roosegaarde during his time at the fine art academy. Inspired by a walk through the desert, where heat blurred the air and nomads appeared on the horizon, Roosegaarde created this dynamic installation to capture the essence of dreams and human intimacy.
Using mesh bed bases—chosen for their affordability and availability—Roosegaarde crafted 22 spirals and placed them outdoors on his university campus. The installation created an evocative landscape of sleeping, dreaming, and making love.
In 2002, 22 BEDS was purchased by Royal Auping for their art collection. The sale price, equivalent to 12 months of student rent, marked a significant milestone in Roosegaarde's career, validating his work and giving him the financial stability to continue his artistic pursuits.
2002, Enschede, NL. Bed spirals, steel, paint; 1,100x50x300 cm (LxWxH).
22 BEDS is part of the Royal Auping art collection.
