Smog Free Bicycle

Press Conference Smog Free Bicycle

SMOG FREE BICYCLE is developed with ofo, the leading Chinese bike sharing programme and was launched at World Economic Forum in Dalian, China. The design of the first SMOG FREE BICYCLE prototype is inspired by the manta ray, a fish that filters water for food. The bicycle works in a similar way, with a plug-in device on the steering wheel of an existing bicycle it filters the air.

The innovative SMOG FREE BICYCLE inhales polluted air, cleans it, and releases clean air around the cyclist. The intention is to make it a medium for smog free cities, generating clean air to celebrate the bicycle and making thousands of bikes to create an impact on the larger urban scale.

SMOG FREE PROJECT is a series of urban innovations led by Daan Roosegaarde to reduce pollution and provide an inspirational experience of a clean future. SMOG FREE TOWER, SMOG FREE RING and SMOG FREE BICYCLE provide local solutions for clean air in public spaces. Here along with governments, students and the clean-tech industry, people can work together to make a whole city smog free.

The SMOG FREE BICYCLE has won several prestigious awards, including the Grand Award for Sustainability, the Ethics Ethical Award 2019, the Design For Asia (Gold Award), the Design For Asia (Graphite Pencil), D&AD Impact, the Notable Design for Social Impact Award (Core77), the Platinum Award (A'Design Award), the German Design Award, and the Excellent Product Design Award in Germany.

The SMOG FREE BICYCLE, incorporating smog-free technology and a custom design on the ofo bicycle, launched its first prototype in 2018. The project was inspired by the Smog Free workshop held in Beijing in 2017, which included contributions from artist Matt Hope and Professor Yang from Tsinghua University.
