Interactive and sustainable roads of tomorrow.
SMART HIGHWAY is a series of interactive and sustainable roads designed for the future. Its GLOWING LINES charge during the day and glow for several hours at night, creating an iconic highway experience and enhancing safety. SMART HIGHWAY integrates light, energy, and information to create smart roads that interact with people.
The first GLOWING LINES were implemented after a three-month trial in the Netherlands, glowing for up to eight hours each night.
SMART HIGHWAY also includes projects like the Electric Priority Lane, which charges electric cars as they drive, and the glowing VAN GOGH BICYCLE PATH, made of thousands of twinkling stones.
This collaboration between Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans exemplifies innovative industry, blending Roosegaarde’s design with Heijmans' craftsmanship to achieve a shared goal: the innovation of the Dutch landscape.
SMART HIGHWAY has been awarded with 'Best Future Concept' by the Dutch Design Awards and is winner of the INDEX Award 2013.
From 2012 to 2015, smart coatings, energy harvesting, sensors, and other media were developed. The concept and design were created by Studio Roosegaarde in collaboration with engineers from Heijmans.
GLOWING LINES was made in collaboration with Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans N.V., with support from the Province of Brabant, the city of Eindhoven, the city of Oss, and BKKC.
