SYNC
Highlights your steps on the smart membrane.
SYNC, commissioned by BMWi, is an interactive installation that transforms movement into light. Debuting at Art Basel 2019, the artwork was inspired by BMW's vision for the future of mobility and developed through discussions between Daan Roosegaarde and BMW's Design Director, Adrian van Hooydonk. SYNC explores the connection between humans, vehicles, and environments in the age of autonomous driving.
The artwork features a flexible membrane with lasers scanning underneath. As visitors walk across the surface, SYNC highlights their presence by revealing blue contour lines when they touch the membrane. These interactions create shared spaces of light, symbolizing the importance of human connection in modern society.
Organic shapes, resembling jellyfish, appear and disappear as visitors move. A custom soundscape by 'Tale of Us' enhances the immersive experience, encouraging reflection on both individual and collective impact.
By blending art and technology, SYNC emphasizes our shared responsibility for a sustainable future.
SYNC (2019) features a 100m² membrane with lasers and premiered at Art Basel from June 13 to June 16, 2019. Commissioned by BMWi, the installation explores interaction and connection through light and movement.
Daan Roosegaarde shares, "When I was a boy, I never stayed inside. I always went outside, playing in nature, building tree huts, watching ants. For me, this is the essence of design: creating landscapes to which you feel connected—mind, body, and with each other."
Adrian van Hooydonk, Design Director of BMW, adds, "Collaborations with designers and artists are a valuable source of inspiration for me and my team. The creative exchange with Daan Roosegaarde encouraged us to explore new forms of interaction."
