VARIANTS explores individuality and security through parametric design, using honeycomb cardboard as the primary material. Each piece is computer-generated, resulting in subtle variations that make every VARIANT unique, blending uniformity with individuality and fostering both physical and emotional connections with viewers.

Inspired by Daan Roosegaarde’s personal history of working and sleeping in a used bookstore as a teenager, VARIANTS recreates the sense of security and intimacy he found in books. The parametric design captures this experience, allowing each piece to reflect the personal connections people have with literature and the spaces they inhabit.

In creating VARIANTS, Roosegaarde not only pays homage to his past but also invites others to explore their own relationship with literature and personal spaces. The artwork bridges the tangible world of books with the abstract realm of memories and emotions.

Through innovative design and materiality, VARIANTS offers a dynamic yet intimate environment, echoing the immersive embrace of a good book.

2004, Various libraries, NL. Honeycomb cardboard, coating, variable sizes; 120x120x200 cm (lxwxh).

VARIANTS is commissioned by various libraries in the Netherlands, including those in Zaandam and Enschede. Computer simulations made in collaboration with Jeroen Coenders.
